As well as being co-founder and CMO of TDF Sports, TJ Galiardi is a former professional hockey player with a career spanning 10 years. We caught up with TJ Galiardi in-between meetings to discuss business, his trust in supplements and how he has transitioned to life off the ice.
TDF Sports: Thanks for chatting with us today TJ.
What peaked your interest in choosing to start a business after you retired from pro sports?
T.J: I was lucky enough to meet Darren my second summer in the NHL since then he’s really become my mentor. We had done a few deals over the years and the timing for us to start “The Doctor’s Formula” (edit: now TDF Sports) couldn’t have been better. I’ve always felt there is much more to life than playing hockey; and had a fun 10 years as a professional, but it was time to move on to the next phase of my development.
TDF Sports: What’s been the biggest adjustment going from professional sports to the office?
TJ: To be honest, it has been seamless. The biggest thing for me was that I take time in the day to do something active; yoga, pilates, HIIT, etc. At TDF Sports we all understand the importance of physical wellness translating to a happier more productive experience in the office.
TDF Sports: How long has TDF Sports been in the works? What were the key factors that you were most interested in when deciding to co-found a sports nutrition brand?
TJ: DB and I have been brainstorming his return to the sports nutrition industry for well over a year. We’ve taken valuable lessons learned from past brand experience and put it into practice with TDF Sports. It was important for us to develop a brand that athletes could trust. I’m vegan and very environmentally conscious. It isn’t easy finding a brand that fits that lifestyle and is designed with athletes in mind. Our focus is on making supplements that are good for you and good for the planet.
TDF: You mentioned trust, how important is that for a pro athlete to have in their supplements?
What did you look for when choosing what brand to take?
TJ: Early in my career I was taking an off the shelf multi-vitamin and it popped up on the potential banned substances list, luckily nothing ever came of it but it taught me a valuable lesson; beware of what you put into your body. Unfortunately, many brands in the industry continue to walk the line with sketchy ingredients and risky additives. The main thing all athletes should look for is the “NSF” certification.
TDF Sports: What are the drug testing procedures like in the NHL? Finally, what assurances do you get from seeing the NSF logo on a brand?
TJ: Every player on each team is tested 3+ times per season, no exceptions. When you see the NSF certification, you have that peace of mind that you will always remain clean!
Shop TDF Sports line of supplements, which are all NSF-certified for sport.
