An idea between two friends on an airplane in 2017 has drawn more professional athlete investors than any other company ever. The idea seems simple; take fruits and vegetables that are perfectly edible, but not saleable, and upcycle them into powders used in supplements. This seemingly obvious process has lead to Beyond Food being praised as, “The greatest innovation in the food waste space in over 100 years”.
When well known entrepreneur Dr. Darren Burke & former NHL player TJ Galiardi co-founded Beyond Food they didn’t know how bad the food waste problem really was, “The more layers of the onion we peeled back, from grocers to farms, the more produce we found being tossed into a landfill” Galiardi said from his Halifax office. “We’ve found a way to create a full circle sustainable model out of highly nutritious produce that was needlessly being discarded.”
The pair has been working with a national grocer and several large scale farms to help mitigate unnecessary waste for over a year and has plans to move across the country and eventually, the globe. Dr. Darren Burke explains, “Frankly, we were so disgusted seeing tonnes of fruits & vegetables being buried and creating methane emissions that we decided to take a simple approach to the problem. By extending the shelf life of the produce, you give yourself time to find high value uses for it.”
Beyond Food provides the raw materials for their plant based supplement brand, TDF Sports. The brand has taken the industry by storm with unique partnerships and collaborations across the sport world; attracting investments from 15 profession athletes. The list includes; Joe Thornton, Torey Krug, Adam Lowry, Brooks Orpik, Adam McQuade, Jason Demers, JM Liles, Jim Slater, Adam Burish and 6 others.
